NEJA, Bryant College Celebrate Black History Month

SMITHFIELD, R.I.-- The New England Jazz Alliance helped celebrate Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Bryant College with its New England Jazz Hall of Fame exhibit.
The highlight of the evening was a concert by Kendrick Oliver and his New Life Jazz Orchestra and vocalists Monica Lynk and Kevin Mahogany.
NEJA's day program included a showing of "A Boston Jazz Memoir" hosted by WGBH's Ron Gill and appearances by people very

closely connected to New England's African-American musical history, including renowned tenor sax man Andy McGhee, Boston's Lady of Song Mae Arnette, former Musicians Local 535 members Burt Walker and Bunky Emerson, New England's most knowledgeable jazz fan Arthur Howard, international jazz artist Shawnn Monteiro of Rhode Island, and Myra McAdoo, whose Boston childhood home was frequented by jazz greats such as Duke Ellington and Nat Cole.
